Spectral Ecology secures £45k for drone-based environmental mapping
Published
Utilising hyperspectral sensors and LiDAR-equipped drones, Spectral Ecology Limited provides landscape-scale ecological mapping and risk assessment for land managers. The Swansea-based company has secured £45k in a new funding round, which places its estimated post-money valuation at £213.3k.
Founded in April 2025, the consultancy operates from Gorseinon and currently lists two employees. The firm addresses complex ecological problems by combining traditional survey techniques with advanced technology to map, measure, and model ecological communities. Its core services include invasive species management, habitat mapping, and wetland restoration for clients managing large areas of land.
The company uses unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to gather data on ecosystem services and environmental conditions. This information provides tools for environmental managers to assess and mitigate risks across whole landscapes. By using multispectral sensors and LiDAR, the team can identify specific plant species, map terrain elevation, and monitor health indicators that are often invisible to the naked eye or standard photography.
This funding round follows an allotment of shares in April, with formal documentation filed in May. The £45k investment provides early-stage capital for the Welsh startup as it develops its next-generation modelling and geospatial mapping capabilities. The business focuses on bringing cutting-edge ecological science to clients, providing data-driven insights into environmental conditions and ecosystem services.
