SideCog secures £200k for cognitive EdTech platform

Targeting the gap between surface-level revision and deep conceptual understanding, SideCog has raised an estimated £200k in its latest funding round. The Alton-based educational technology startup focuses on a cognitive learning platform designed to improve student understanding by diagnosing specific misconceptions and providing adaptive lessons.

Incorporated in January, SideCog aims to move beyond standard EdTech models that focus on content delivery and question generation. The platform uses a proprietary diagnostic intelligence layer to map a learner's conceptual knowledge in real time. This system identifies gaps in understanding and offers targeted micro-teaching to repair those gaps, rather than providing static revision materials.

The company currently operates with a team of two employees. Its approach is based on cognitive science principles, emphasizing that durable learning requires effortful thinking and connected knowledge rather than isolated facts. SideCog integrates curriculum-aligned content, including government-funded resources, while focusing its internal development on identifying and fixing student misconceptions at scale.

The funding (documented in May with an allotment date also in May) will support the platform's mission to provide personalized learning support for children. SideCog provides detailed feedback on written answers and offers scaffolding and questioning that adapts dynamically to the user's progress. The platform is designed for use by both families and teachers to monitor and assist in a child's educational development. SideCog translates cognitive science principles into practice by reinforcing learning through retrieval and spaced practice, helping learners build deeper understanding rather than just completing more work.
