Decades Travel Secures £341.7k Seed Funding to Pioneer Gap Years for the Over-50s
Published
Penzance-based Decades Travel Limited has raised £341.7k in a seed funding round, achieving an estimated post-money valuation of £3.5m. The company specialises in curating three-month travel experiences and gap years specifically designed for retirees and semi-retirees aged 50 and over.
Founded in March 2025 by Laura Cannon, Decades Travel addresses a growing demand among older demographics for longer, more immersive travel experiences. Moving away from traditional cruises or rigid coach tours, the startup organises small-group itineraries that blend independent solo exploration with hosted group activities and pre-arranged accommodation. The company caters to travellers who seek the freedom of independent discovery alongside the safety and social connection of a curated group, typically consisting of eight to twelve like-minded individuals.
The seed round was allotted on 13 March 2026 and filed on 17 March 2026. The £341.7k capital injection values the year-old business at £3.5m post-money. Specific investors were not disclosed in the latest corporate filings, and as this is the first major funding event since the company was incorporated, there are no previous rounds for comparison. Furthermore, as a recently established entity, historical financial metrics such as annual revenue, employee headcount, and profit or loss figures are not yet publicly available. The new funding is expected to support the rollout of their initial travel chapters, which include extended stays in destinations such as Southeast Asia, with their first trips commencing in early 2026.
This funding round highlights the increasing intersection of the UK travel technology sector and the silver economy. The over-50s demographic represents a highly lucrative and active market for travel startups. Recent industry figures from 2025 indicate that 95 percent of British adults over 50 travelled during the year, with the 55 to 64 age bracket holding the highest disposable income of any generation in the UK.
The broader UK travel tech ecosystem has also seen significant momentum, providing a strong foundation for early-stage companies like Decades Travel. According to a recent report by Dealroom, commissioned by the Traveltech Innovation Hub at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, UK travel tech companies secured a record £387.6m in venture capital funding during 2024. Decades Travel is positioning itself to capture a unique segment of this active market by offering extended, slow-travel stays that provide both the logistical support of a traditional tour and the cultural immersion of a gap year.
